Overview
Atlas Marine & Cargo is a specialist underwriter of high-value cargo, hull and machinery, and specie risks. The firm insures fine art, precious metals, pharmaceuticals, aerospace components, and luxury goods in transit across more than 140 countries, with lead-line capacity on some of the most complex single-voyage risks in the market.
History
Founded in 1961 by marine surveyor Harold Whitcombe as a small cargo-surveying practice on the Miami River, Atlas wrote its first policy covering a consignment of Venezuelan coffee bound for Rotterdam.
Through the 1980s the firm built a reputation in specie and fine-art transit, becoming the preferred underwriter for several major auction houses.
Atlantic Capital Group acquired Atlas in 2004, recapitalizing its balance sheet and funding expansion into Panama, Madrid and Dubai. Today Atlas is the cornerstone of the Group's risk platform.
